irst of all, the letters themselves are an abbreviation for The Society for Creative Anachronism. For those of you that aren't sure what anachronism means the loose definition means something that is out of time (i.e. the mention of clocks in Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar")
"
hat is the SCA?" you ask. Why thank you for asking. It is a nonprofit educational organization that emphasizes on the study of the European Middle Ages. Over recent years, The SCA has expanded its scope to include those civilizations of that time period that had contact with Medieval Europe.
hat we call the Knowne World is currently divided into 16 kingdoms. You'll find links to each one elsewhere on this site. Each kingdom is divided into a combination of principalities, baronies, shires, and cantons, what are our names for local chapters within the SCA. Not every kingdom has a principality, but most have at least one barony.
What is the purpose of the SCA?
hen someone asks me what our purpose is in the grand scheme of things, I like to tell them this:
- Our purpose is to relive the times when there was a Code of Honor amongst the populace. To educate those who wish to learn this Code and translate that to our everyday lives outside the SCA.
n addition to learning to live this Code, you have the opportunity to learn various things within the SCA. Some of which include Period Dancing, Calligraphy, Music, Court Procedures, Combat Martial Arts (both heavy and light weaponry). Virtually a cornucopia of material can found within the SCA when it comes to learning about the life and times of Medieval Europe.
How can I find the local chapter nearest me?
hat's simple. Obviously, m'lord you are on the internet. Therefore, all you have to do is go to the SCA Home Page, or type in http://www.sca.org into your browser's addy window. Next, click on the word "GEOGRAPHY". From there you will find the Kingdom that you reside in. There, you will find whom to contact in your local area, most likely it will be person listed as "seneschal" whom I like to call the mayor of the local area
o give you an example, our current roster of crew live in Florida. This would translate in SCAdian terms: we live in the Kingdom of Trimaris.
ne of the great things about being in the SCA is you get to have fun while learning about the Middle Ages. Only your imagination in regards to your continued development within the SCA is your limitation. And always remember, this is a hobby. When it get's to the point where you are no longer having fun then it is no longer a hobby.
hope this answered your initial question as to what the SCA is. The best thing of course is to contact your local group and go to the meetings, even attend an few events before you make your final decision. Regardless I hope you find your time with us, no matter how long or short, to be educational and fun. "Cause that's what we're all about."
ay you live as long as you wish and love as long as you live
